Weingut Alte Grafschaft
Info:
The Old County has a long and fascinating history. For more than four centuries, our walls have witnessed the highs and lows of the wine world. Founded by a renowned Wertheim wine merchant, the winery grew under the patronage of the Wertheim nobility to its current size. In 2010, the winery returned to the hands of a dedicated Wertheim wine merchant family and has been operated since 2023 in collaboration with a winemaking family from Champagne.
The winery, located in Kreuzwertheim and with parcels in Baden and Franconia, spans an area of 13 hectares and is divided into five terroirs: Satzenberg, Kaffelstein, Ebenrain, Sonnenberg, and First. The winery is dedicated exclusively to the production of dry wines and utilizes the richness of its locations to fully exploit the potential of the grape varieties Riesling, Weißburgunder, Silvaner, and Spätburgunder.
The Spielmann family has been running their wine trading company since 1932, which was founded in Wertheim and remains based there to this day. Over the generations, the core business has shifted from barrel purchasing and bottling to a trading business with French wines. This is how the Spielmann and Legras families got to know each other. The two families have now been working together for almost 30 years, and the relationship has grown far beyond business. When the opportunity arose for Jérôme Legras to become involved with the Old County Winery, he did not hesitate.
"I fell in love with the Old County at first sight when Norbert Spielmann and Christoph Dinkel bought it over ten years ago. They made it clear to me how important it is to preserve viticulture on these heroic parcels. Norbert and I want to prepare this great vineyard for the next generations with the help of Julius Spielmann. - Jérôme Legras,
