Johann Topf
Info:
In the picturesque village of Straß im Straßertal, at the foot of the Gaisberg, lies the traditional Johann Topf winery.
It is run by Hans and Magdalena Topf.
An impressive place where tradition and innovation lovingly merge harmoniously. Last year, with great attention to detail, a new tasting room in the form of a modern cube was added to a baroque ambience.
The most important things for the winemaking couple are their four sons, Hans Peter, Maximilian, Alexander and Julius, as well as living in an intact nature, where great wines grow.
The pride and joy of winemaker Hans Topf are the sites of the family winery - in the premium sites of the Kamptal, where great care is taken to plant the right variety on the right soil.
In addition to Ofenberg (Grüner Veltliner), Gaisberg (Riesling), Wechselberg (Grüner Veltliner and Riesling), Hasel (Chardonnay and Sauvignon), Stangl (Pinot Blanc) and Heiligenstein (Riesling), he is particularly fond of Wechselberg Spiegel, where an entire slope was turned towards the sun, and a south-western slope became a southern site.
Now Riesling thrives on this mineral permeable soil.
The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand in several passes, the date of harvest varies from year to year and depends exclusively on the physiological ripeness of the grapes.
The Topf family's wines mature in the 500-year-old historic cellar vaults - 12 metres deep inside the Gaisberg
Depending on the variety, ripeness or vintage, it is decided whether the wines are matured in steel or in wood. Every year, new wooden barrels made of local Manhartsberg oak ranging from 600 to 2500 litres are delivered by local binder masters
The wines are just as personal as the people from this winery.
