High above the terraced Moselle, hikers and enthusiasts can taste and enjoy the Calmont wines from our winery. Because here at the Bremmer Gipfelkreuz, we have been supplying guests with Riesling and Rivaner in our wine tavern since 2003. And anyone who knows the Bremmer Calmont vineyard knows that this is an imposing speciality. After all, it is the steepest vineyard site in Europe.
Much of the work here is still done by hand. Since 2004, the entire family - including our three helping children - has been assisted in the cultivation by a monorack railway that winds its way up the steep vineyard. After all, together with vineyards in the Neefer Frauenberg, this amounts to 1.5 hectares of yield area.
When we took over the vineyard from our parents in 1995, it was only 0.75 hectares. The site is characterised by a high proportion of slate and greywacke, which provides ideal growing conditions for Riesling, 90 % of which is cultivated. We also grow Pinot Blanc and Rivaner.
The soil structure is complemented by a distinctive quality philosophy: strict yield limitation (reduced pruning), targeted care of the vineyards during the vegetation period and exclusively organic fertilisation are the important starting points for the best possible harvest.
Gentle pressing, careful pre-clarification of the musts, controlled fermentation (possibly cooling), reductive ageing of the young wines and subsequent stainless steel storage on the fine lees do the rest for the characteristic wines of our Wiengut.
Have we also aroused your interest in our wines?
We would be pleased to welcome you at our winery.
Best regards from the steepest vineyard in Europe
