The Wagram is a unique loess terroir, Grüner and Roter Veltliner are its congenial grape varieties. This is exactly what the Leth family's winery focuses on, as almost two thirds of the vineyard area of just over 50 hectares is reserved for these two varieties. The range is complemented by Riesling, Zweigelt and the Burgundy varieties.
"Great wines are only produced when the vines are healthy and the environment is intact, we respect that and that's why we decided to switch to organic farming," explains Franz Leth Jr. who is now the third generation to lead the winery into the future. "Because we also organise all other business processes in an ecologically balanced way, we have been certified "Sustainable Austria" for several years now, he adds.
When Franz Leth Jr. talks about his wine philosophy, it is succinct and to the point: "First and foremost, I make wines that I like to drink myself and I am only satisfied when they fulfil this requirement one hundred per cent. That's why there's no room for high-sounding fruit bombs in the range, the Grüner Veltliner should be flavoursome in the traditional style, the Roter Veltliner dense and creamy and the Riesling mineral and long-lasting. Even the lighter representatives of the "Klassik" series impress with their typical flavour, clear varietal character and finesse-rich drinking pleasure. However, the potential of each vintage is revealed by the single-vineyard wines, those from the top vineyards are classified as "Erste Lagen" by the traditional Austrian wineries. From there come complex, highly mature wines with a dense body and the finest minerality.
The top quality level of the entire range of wines is also reflected in the specialised press; the winery can be found in all Austrian wine guides (Falstaff, Vinaria, A la Carte, Gault Millau, Wein.pur) with top ratings.
