Situated in the Rhine plain, next to the Haardt Mountains, Ellerstadt's deep soils with gravel content provide mineral, finely tuned wines. The climate is dry and - characteristic for the people of the region - friendly. It was here that Heinrich Vollmer founded one of Germany's now best-known private wineries in 1972. Particularly outstanding are his red wines of international standard, which are based on the formative years of his apprenticeship in Burgundy.
No wonder, then, that Germany's first Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard was his.
