The foundation stone of today's winery was laid by Sontag Spindler, who came to Forst around 1620 during the turmoil of the 30 Years' War. Since then, the Spindlers, now in the 11th generation, have been cultivating wine in Forst.
On 11 June 1791, the first public wine auction from private hands took place at the winery.
Today Markus J. Spindler cultivates 20 hectares of vineyards in Ruppertsberg, Deidesheim and all of Forst's top sites. After training as a winemaker (von Winning, E. Müller and F. Becker) with several internships abroad in France, Austria and California and graduating from the wine academy in Geisenheim, Markus Spindler joined the winery in 2008.

With 85% of the vineyard area, the main focus is on the Riesling variety in the top vineyard sites of Forst. The white grape varieties Pinot Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc are also cultivated. In the red wine segment, Pinot Noir plays the leading role. From the grape varieties Merlot, Blaufränkisch and Cabernet Cubin, a rosé and a red wine of international style are produced every year.
When cultivating the vines, attention is paid to the vitality of the soil and the diversity of the vineyard eco-system. Thus, cultivation takes place according to the guidelines of organic viticulture. Weed control has been carried out exclusively by hand and with mechanical equipment at the Heinrich Spindler winery for over 20 years. In order to increase biodiversity in the vineyard and to maintain a healthy soil structure, greening mixtures are sown in the vine alleys. In addition, the soil is supplied with home-produced compost, not least in order to do justice to climate change, which is leading to drier summers.
Low pruning levels and targeted thinning of the grapes in summer ensure optimal ripening of the grapes.
