The family-run Engelhof vineyard is located in the Lake Constance area, directly on the Swiss border
directly on the Swiss border and cultivates 24 hectares, 20 hectares of which are in rounded-off sole ownership on the Hohentengener Oelberg. Vineyards were already cultivated in our community a long time ago, as shown by the discovery of the oldest documentary evidence of vine cultivation in Baden-Württemberg.
It is a vine knife from the Merovingian period, around 700 AD, which can now be seen in the Colombischlössle Archaeological Museum in Freiburg. Natural cultivation is important to us, so that we do not work organically but with ecological thoughts and actions and include nature around us, be it in plant protection or in the selection of the cover crop we want to break the monoculture vineyard and create a diverse habitat for insects and beneficial insects. The main focus is on the varieties of the Burgundy family, due to the location directly on the border to Switzerland also the Gutedel, as well as the Müller-Thurgau, which is the leading variety in the Lake Constance area. The classic range of varieties is complemented by new resistant varieties such as Regent, Solaris, Muscaris, Johanniter and soon Cabernet Blanc. Due to a natural slate deposit on the steep slope of the Hohentengener Oelberg, we decided to plant Riesling there, which in our opinion can best express this unusual soil structure for our region.
We are part of the Lake Constance wine-growing region, and although the lake is no longer in sight, the water from Lake Constance flows directly past the foot of the vineyard in the form of the Rhine.
In the cellar we work a lot with BSA (=biological acid degradation), also with the white wines, but not all wines go through this. Our wines are long-distance runners and are most enjoyable when they have matured in the bottle. We want wines that evolve and don't shoot all their shine at once.
