Organic viticulture in Germany is growing steadily and some of our winegrowing families also produce their grapes in accordance with the EU organic guidelines. These grapes are vinified separately by our cellar team under the direction of cellar master Max Jantke.
We were the first winegrowers' cooperative in Hesse to be awarded the organic seal of the state of Hesse at the Green Week in Berlin in 2018. In general, 80% of our winegrowing families work close to nature. For years, we have been greening the rows of vines in our vineyards with flowering mixtures to provide a year-round habitat and food for beneficial insects. In this way, we make a major contribution to the ecological enhancement of the vineyard habitat.
The Odenwald Winegrowers' Co-operative was founded in 1959 under the motto "One for all, all for one". Today, vinum autmundis is the largest winegrowing business in the Umstadt area and cultivates around 75 hectares with its 90 members. This corresponds to almost 85% of the vineyards in the Umstadt area.
In addition to the classic grape varieties such as Riesling, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir, innovative grape varieties such as Cabernet Blanc, Regent, Acolon, the fruity grape variety Sauvignon Blanc and the rediscovered grape variety Roter Riesling are also grown. The same goes for our young line with the wines LÄUFT and the sparkling wine KNALLT. Thanks to the special soil diversity, a large number of grape varieties thrive on the Odenwald wine island.
