This wonderful landscape, which has been passed down for four generations, now belongs to us, Sara, Vanessa and Babettli Azzone.
I, Babettli, will tell you their story. It is a story that starts from far away.
The origins of the estate date back to 1404, when the Roveglio family acquired land and farmhouses from the monastery of San Salvatore in Brescia (now Santa Giulia in Brescia).
This is how the name came about, but our wine adventure began at the end of the nineteenth century, when my great-grandfather Federico Zweifel left his home canton of Glarus in Switzerland to find better working conditions in Italy.
In Italy, he fell in love with Lake Garda, where he found a flourishing nature and fertile soil that proved suitable for growing grapes.
Federico Zweifel began buying estates and converting these often neglected properties into vineyards. His son Giusto, my grandfather, did the same and began to produce wine that was originally only intended for friends and local customers. The production method remained the traditional one for many years, handed down from one generation of farmers to the next.
In the 1980s, a major change took place when my father Giovanni Felice Azzone, Professor of General Pathology at the University of Padua and member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, took over the management of Tenuta Roveglia after my grandfather's death.
My father put all his heart and soul into this winery: research activities and the courage to innovate technologically.
His experience as a scientist at the head of internationally recognised laboratories had convinced him more and more that the best results are achieved above all through listening and dialogue between all the employees.
Thanks to the invaluable experience of Paolo Fabiani, the current director of the company and a valuable collaborator of my father from the very beginning, a review of production methods and the introduction of new methods and cutting-edge winemaking systems were initiated....
