Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier
Info:
Agriculture and viticulture have always played a major role within the Catholic Church and its dioceses. For centuries, they contributed significantly to their financing. In many places - as in the case of the Episcopal Vineyards of Trier - the property has been built up over long periods of time, largely through endowments and donations to the individual institutions, through good and thrifty management and through hard work in agriculture and in the vineyard, among other things.
The administration of the Episcopal Vineyards Trier, or Episcopal Vineyards Trier for short, is one of the most historically significant vineyards in Germany. The wineries emerged in 1966 from a merger of the previously independent wineries of the three shareholders. The shareholders are the Episcopal Convict Trier, the Episcopal Seminary Trier and the High Cathedral Church Trier. All three partners are corporations under public law.
The Bischöfliche Weingüter Trier are run as an independent, private enterprise in the form of a civil law partnership (GbR). Estate director Dr Karsten Weyand represents the winery in an executive capacity. The board of directors includes the heads of all three corporations. Further members are appointed by the Bishop of Trier. The Chairman of the Board of Directors is the Episcopal Vicar General of the Diocese of Trier.
Since 2003, the Episcopal Vineyards of Trier have also managed the vineyards of the former Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium foundation vineyard, which was acquired by the Episcopal Seminary of Trier this year.
