The attentive reader will already have noticed that some of my tasting notes have a score and others do not. This is partly because with some wines I am simply not sure how they will develop. With other wines, however, I also find it difficult to differentiate. An example of this is the vertical of Pichon Longueville Baron, which I recently had the opportunity to taste. I think I can describe the differences and merits of the various vintages well and also draw up a ranking list for myself. But the problem is to put these wines in relation to others that were not there. How good is the best in the vertical really? And isn't the weakest perhaps still a very good wine that is only in the shadow of the even better ones?
