The winery - a legend

The winegrowing tradition of the Thanisch family can be traced back over more than 350 years: in 1636, their name was first mentioned in the register of the town of Bernkastel. The quality of their wines quickly earned the family an excellent reputation, even far beyond the Moselle region.
At the end of the 18th century, the Thanischs acquired the "Bernkasteler Doctor" vineyard, which owes its name to the legend according to which spa leader Boemond II of Trier was cured of a serious illness in 1360 by drinking wine from this vineyard.

Internationally, the winery made a name for itself from the middle of the 19th century under the leadership of Dr. Hugo Thanisch. Since then, Thanisch wines have repeatedly achieved spectacular prices at international auctions.

In 1988, for example, a 1921 Trockenbeerenauslese achieved the incredible sum of 11,200 Marks. (This was a bottle of the first Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese that was vinified on the Mosel).

The winery Witwe. Dr. H. Thanisch, Heirs Müller-Burggraef is now owned by Margrit Müller-Burggraef, a granddaughter of Hugo Thanisch and it is run with continued national and international success. The many prizes and awards with which the wines have been crowned for years speak for this, such as most recently the "Staatsehrenpreis für besondere Leistungen" several times.
