Following a trip to California by Jacques Gravegeal (President and Founder of Pays d'Oc PGI) and Robert Skalli and the discovery of single-variety wines, the Pays d'Oc label was created with the essence of varietal wines with a southern French accent!
Guided by the desire to respond to international demand, the pioneering winegrowers of Pays d'Oc PGI have relied since 1987 on this DNA around the grape variety, in order to position themselves on the world market and stand out nationally.
The diversity of grape varieties, the key to the success of the label, which authorises 58 grape varieties, is the result of an in-depth revolution in the vineyard, which was totally avant-garde at the time. Today, the international key to understanding wine is the grape variety for consumers, and Pays d'Oc wines are making their mark in this new market. After 22 years as Vins de Pays, they became Pays d'Oc PGI in 2009. They are now under the authority of the Institut National de la Qualité et de l'Origine (INAO).
The concept around the Pays d'Oc PGI was quickly adopted and the varietal wines of the label quickly found their place on the markets. Today, 25 bottles of Pays d'Oc PGI wines are sold worldwide every second.
The Syndicat des Producteurs de Vin de Pays d'Oc, the organisation responsible for defending and managing the label, was created in 1987. Subsequently, the Pays d'Oc PGI wine interprofession named INTER OC was created in 2005. Its missions are varied and include contributing to market management, ensuring knowledge of supply and demand, ensuring downstream quality monitoring and strengthening food safety. One of the other important aspects of the INTER OC interprofession is to promote the Pays d'Oc PGI label nationally and internationally by setting up various and varied communication actions.
More than 1000 structures (cooperative wineries, independent wineries and merchants) are involved in the Pays d'Oc PGI label.
